Burnham Bunch: Halloween

Two more days until Halloween! We invited the kiddos to wear their costumes …. we had Anna, a Fancy Pirate and a Sheriff. We read two books: Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills (with flannel board activity), Click, Clack, Boo! by Doreen Cronin (super cute!); sang a song: Horns, Fangs, Knees and Claws (twice!), played a game: Guess the Ghost Game; and a made a spooky ghost craft. AND everyone left with a treat! Phew! Happy Halloween to all!

Techsplorers: Squishy Circuits

So excited to have Chris Fisher back for the school year. This year he will be doing a series of programs called Techsplorers. He and the kiddos will be exploring all that is STEM. First up … Squishy Circuits.

What is STEM? It is a push toward education and integrated curriculum policies in order to improve our children’s competitiveness in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (an alternate version is STEAM which adds Art to the mix). Want to learn more? STEM Education Coalition ; Why Science ; Girl Starts.

We also own a fantastic series of books in the 21st Century Skills Innovation Library: Makers As Innovators which discuss Squishy Circuits, 3D Labs, MakerSpaces and more ….

Burnham Bunch: Spiders

As we near Halloween, spooky spiders are our theme! We read The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle, and I used the flannel board to build a web as the story progressed. We also sang a wonderful ditty (that I can. not. get. out. of. my. head) There’s a Spider on the Floor. The final touch, a ‘secret’ spider web painting using a paper plate, white crayon, and a bit of black poster paint … complete with a spooky black spider.

Science Explorers: Sink or Float?

Halloween = candy! We blew-up Peeps in the microwave, and watched the beautiful colors of Gobstoppers mix together. We also did a hands-on experiment for the kiddos: which candy would sink or float. We started of with a variety of chocolate candy bars … and they ALL sank to the bottom. This was not the result that I expected. So, we decided to try some sugary candy: Skittles, Starburst, and Lifesaver jellies. These all sank to the bottom as well! Last up … a Peep? What would happen. Well, it floated! Why? Well, as the kiddos stated, a marshmallow is filled with air and therefore will float, just like a pool float. Lots of fun …
